President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has blamed opposition figures Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi for the hunger and poverty confronting Nigerians, insisting that his administration is working to address the country’s economic challenges.Tinubu made the remarks on Saturday, October 24, 2026, during the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign flag-off rally at Ranchers Bees Stadium in Kaduna State, as the ruling party began its mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections.Speaking before party supporters, the President challenged his political opponents over their criticism of the country’s economic situation, arguing that they were responsible for creating the problems they now highlight.
“I have an argument. I hear my opponent talking about hunger, poverty. Who created it? They did! They created the hunger, they created the poverty. We are trying to eradicate it,” Tinubu said. The President also defended his administration’s record on salary payments, praising state governors for their performance and expressing confidence in their efforts to promote development.“We pay salaries regularly. Our governors are working. I am proud of them. They are developing,” he added.
Tinubu Seeks Another Mandate in 2027
Beyond defending his government’s record, Tinubu used the rally to thank Kaduna residents for their support during the 2023 presidential election and appealed to them to support his re-election bid.
“You gave me joy to remember the victory you gave me to become president. I come again to thank you,” he told the crowd.
The President also reiterated his commitment to continuity, prosperity, progress and development, presenting his administration’s agenda as a reason for Nigerians to give him another term in office. The Kaduna rally marks a key moment in the APC’s preparations for the 2027 elections, bringing together party leaders, supporters and political stakeholders as the party seeks to strengthen its support base.
Hunger and Poverty Remain Major Public Concerns
Tinubu’s comments are likely to generate further debate over who bears responsibility for Nigeria’s economic difficulties and how effectively the government is responding to them. While the President maintains that his administration is working to eradicate hunger and poverty, Nigerians continue to look for practical improvements in food affordability, employment opportunities, purchasing power and living conditions.
The remarks also place economic performance firmly at the centre of the political conversation ahead of the next general election, with the ruling party and opposition expected to face growing scrutiny over their plans for the country.
