MUTFWANG DEFENDS TINUBU’S ECONOMIC RECORD, SAYS PRESIDENT INHERITED NIGERIA ON BRINK OF COLLAPSE
Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has defended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic policies, saying his administration inherited a country facing severe economic challenges and was already on the brink of collapse when it assumed office in 2023.Mutfwang made the remarks on Monday during the formal inauguration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Campaign Council in Jos, Plateau State, where he highlighted what he described as improvements in the country’s economic situation under the Tinubu administration.
According to the governor, the previous administration left behind an economy struggling with external debt obligations, declining foreign reserves and difficulties in meeting international financial commitments. He argued that the situation was so severe that some international airlines reportedly suspended operations in Nigeria because they could not repatriate their earnings due to limited access to foreign exchange.
“Where did President Tinubu meet Nigeria in 2023? He met Nigeria tottering on the brink of collapse; Nigeria that could not service its external debts,” Mutfwang said.
The governor further claimed that Nigeria’s external reserves had declined to slightly above $3 billion before Tinubu assumed office, but had since improved to more than $50 billion.
MUTFWANG HIGHLIGHTS IMPROVEMENTS IN FUEL SUPPLY
Addressing the country’s petroleum situation, Mutfwang said Nigerians had previously endured prolonged fuel shortages, spending several days in queues at filling stations during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari. He acknowledged that although petrol prices remain high, availability has improved compared with the shortages experienced in previous years.
“Today, by the grace of God, we have solved one side of the equation. Today fuel is available. It may not be cheap, but it is available,” he stated.
The governor also criticised aspects of the previous administration’s economic management, arguing that decisions involving the country’s future crude oil production had contributed to financial challenges that Nigerians were still experiencing.
GOVERNOR PROJECTS APC VICTORY IN 2027
Turning to the 2027 general elections, Mutfwang expressed confidence that Plateau State would deliver electoral support for President Tinubu in the forthcoming presidential election scheduled for January 16, 2027, according to his remarks. He also called on APC members and supporters to intensify grassroots mobilisation across communities, wards, local government areas and constituencies ahead of the elections.
The governor further expressed optimism about securing another mandate for his administration, urging party members to return to their respective communities and mobilise support. His remarks come amid continuing national discussions over the impact of the Tinubu administration’s economic reforms, particularly their implications for fuel prices, inflation, foreign exchange availability and the cost of living.
